Baggage transfer in Beijing?

I am confused as to how to ensure my baggage is checked through while in international transit, but with two bookings.

My office booked me a return flight from South Africa (where I am) to Beijing. However, I am traveling immediately to Philippines (prior to the event) in the interim on a flight I booked privately. My initial arrival in Beijing and departure to Manila is on the 19th (and in the same terminal), but single-entry visa for China is only for the 30th.

How do I ensure my bags go through? Must I go through immigration without a visa to collect my bags? Tell the airline before I leave to transfer? Is there a way to collect bags in transit?

Skiplagged – Beijing to USA destination

So I leave from Beijing going to (for example) LA USA. Using Skiplagged, the routing puts me as a final destination of Las Vegas.

So… BEIJING > LA > LV

Skiplagged claims you should not check baggage for “hidden cities”, in this case, LA. However, as it is an international flight, won’t I need to claim my bags in LA to put them through immigration/security anyway, where I can then just be on my way?

How to leave Beijing airport (PEK) by foot

I have 5 hours between daytime flights in Beijing Capital airport (terminal 3), and my challenge is to walk out of the airport to eat a bowl of soup at any small local restaurant outside the airport.

The airport seems to be surrounded by semi-urban areas, so finding some food is probably possible:

The main difficulty will probably be to find a walkable way out. How to achieve that?

Google Maps shows walking directions, but it makes me walk on roads without sidewalks such as this one, so I think it can not be trusted in this area:

China transit visa: Fly from DPS (Indonesia) to Shanghai with a layover (2hrs) in Beijing

I fly from DPS to Shanghai with a 2-hour layover in Beijing. Do I have to pass through immigration in Beijing or can I do it in Shanghai where I would like to stay for 5 days with a transit visa?

I just don’t want any problems when I land in Beijing. I will not leave the airport during my 2-hour stay.

Attending a conference in Beijing with special dietary needs

There will be a three week international physics conference (taks in English) in Beijing that I might want to attend. Unfortately I’m a picky eater, being a vegetarian with a nut, peanut and raw soy allergy. I do not speak any Chinese, therefore I expect to be unable to communicate this to the personnel in restaurants or the cafeteria.

The speakers attending are from various countries, therefore I would expect that the locals help the guests choosing meals. But having them translate the menu into English is one thing, asking them to ask the personnel for allergens every single day might become old rather quickly. I’ll get in touch with them about this.

Outside of the conference the attendees might go for food in a group as well, but I don’t think that an English-speaking local would be available at all times. If one has no special dietary needs, just taking something from a bar or buffet is fine, but I would really like to know what I eat.

Is it realistic to do this; perhaps with a note made by a Chinese colleague stating my dietary needs like “please give me some vegetarian dish as long as it does not contain …”? I just do not want to be that guy who is taxing on everyone’s patience because I put myself into a situation relying on other people to help me out.

3-hour Transit in Beijing with two separate airline tickets

I will be flying from Sydney to Beijing with China Eastern and taking a connection in Beijing 3 hours later with Air Astana to Bishkek (Kyrgistan). I will take only hand luggage with me and would like to make use of the 24-hour visa free scheme. Looking at the airport map I realised both airlines operate in Terminal 2. I will have to get a boarding pass for the Air Astana flight in Beijing. Does this mean I can stay within transit in T2 and get the boarding pass there at a transit booth?

Beijing to Cape Town via Istanbul – is a transit visa required?

Good day My son has a South African passport with valid US tourist visa. Flying from Beijing on 27th March and landing in Istanbul on 28th March with 20 hour layover before catching his flight to Cape Town SA.

Does he need a transit visa if he does not leave the airport and if he does leave the airport does he then need a transit visa. Leaving for Cape Town SA on the 29th March.

If he does need a transit visa where does he apply online and what is the fee please.
