How am I supposed to check Defender’s capability when it trusts me blindly after I mark a test malware file as “allowed”?

With enormous amounts of fighting with Windows/Microsoft Defender, I finally managed to download the "test virus" file from onto my desktop.

However, Defender (on the command line) still just says:

Scanning C:\Users\John Doe\Desktop\ found no threats.

No threats? You just had me work for 30 minutes straight to make you not remove the file before it ever even landed on my desktop, and now you consider it to not contain any threats? Is this just because I have "allowed" it?

My entire point of downloading this file was to check if Windows/Microsoft Defender returns a "1" code instead of "0" when it detects a virus (and what it says as text output), but now I can’t even test that because it thinks that the file is not "harmful" just because I allowed it to exist temporarily on my system for the purpose of testing this?

Bottom line: I can’t see any way to test Defender’s output/return code for an actual malware-detected file because it doesn’t even allow me to have the file on my desktop without "allowing" it, which apparently makes it believe me blindly as an authority.

What ways can you give a creature the capability to speak?

I am looking for ways in 5e to grant the capability of speech to a creature ideally permanently. To be specific, I am interested in granting an Artificers Steel Defender and creatures like it the ability to speak. For instance the Steel Defenders stat block states it “understands the languages you speak” implying that it only understands them and does not speak them. I am assuming the possibility of the creature being able to use and attune to items.

Below are some ideas I have had after some initial investigation but none seem sufficient and are limited or dubious rules wise:

Through Magic Items

-“You can speak and understand X” : Ex. Ring of Elemental command, Demon Armor, Efreeti Chain etc.

(Do these apply in our context of a creature with the stat block above? Specific v.s. generic which is which here?)

-Intelligence Boost: Ex. Headband of intellect

(Is boosting intelligence enough to give a creature like the Steel Defender the capability to speak?)

-Telepathy: Ex. Helm of Telepathy

(In general this isn’t truly spoken speech. Oftentimes these are only communication with two people are there items that grant many?)

Through Spells

-Awaken: limitation “Huge or smaller beast or plant”

-Varieties of Polymorph: limitation a transformation itself

-Telepathic spells: limitation is telepathy is not true speech

(in general these have the limitation of possibility of being dispelled and require a spell caster)

Older Editions

Also I know in previous editions 3.5e Pearl of Speech existed, but I am interested in RAW 5e.

If you know of other ways that minimize the limitations involved and require few rare items please share.

In-App Chat Capability

I’m currently building a product for police workforce for task management. In-app chat would be one of the feature in this app so they can coordinate with each other regarding their task.

They’re used to use WhatsApp as their communication tool, but my company would like them to shift into our app completely. Should we implement an in-app chat as advance as WhatsApp or would that cause a problem (eg: app crashing because it’s too heavy)? Would copying other messengers features benefit us in trying to shift their chatting platform? Or is it better to just implement a simple in-app chat feature like Twitter/Instagram and not try to replace their current platform?

How to make this custom capability work?

I am trying to make a custom ability on my page CV people can insert and then view their CV I made a custom capability view_cv and I want for it to remove the option to view their CV.

<a class="edit btn btn-blue" href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php echo __('Check your CV '); ?></a>

I would like for it to remove this button, how would I go about doing that? Thanks in advance!

Can I use Mathematica ML capability to translate an image of a formula?

If I am given a pdf image of a mathematical symbolic formula can I translate it into Mathematica syntax using ML?

I tried using Classify, but I can only translate parts of the equation and I don’t know how do to group the pieces together. Moreover, I found the training set can not have an equal sign. [![I pasted an image because of the images in the training set

Analytics tools, with file import capability

The issue we are facing is as follows: we are providing rich internet applications to corporate clients. As we wanted to obtain feedback on application usage patterns and our clients frowned upon integrating our applications with 3rd party tools such as Google Analytics, we finally had to resort to implementing an “in app” logger, which tracks the basic actions such as which screens the users access, which menus and icons they click, etc. The logger can produce the output in form of XLS, CSV or TXT files.

The question is: anyone knows of a simple analytics tool, into which the XLS / CSV / TXT files can be imported and analyzed? We would like to obtain an overview of the typical: number of sessions per day, average session duration, views / menus / icons must frequently accessed, etc.

Of course we could use Excel and create the analytical formulas, but that might take a lot of work and we would prefer to use something that’s already tried and tested.

5,000+ address blacklist: Does any web e-mail have this capability?

Does any e-mail service allow maintaining a large blacklist (>=5000 addresses/domains)?

Why, for what requirement?

To save e-mail addresses from a “subscription bomb”. Accounts were targeted and signed up for thousands of newsletters, retail catalogs, etc. Inboxes are flooded daily so without a practical solution, years held long term e-mail addresses would have to be given up.

Probably not solutions

  • Microsoft’s e-mail service. It seems (same for O365 or to be limited to 1000 blocked users and domains regardless of the plan chosen.
  • I already have a scrubbed clean list to be blocked (unique addresses/domains only) as a text file. The list size seems to have tapered, which is why I think it’s solvable, not infinite.
  • Spam tools using Bayesian ratings and/or machine Learning. The attacker simply signed up accounts to receive tons of e-mail. A lot from normal businesses that shouldn’t be flagged.

Possible solutions

  • Just discovered Sieve Scripts. It seems not many e-mail web services support them, and their limits are not well documented for given services.
  • Add-ins/Plugsins. Some exist for web e-mail services and can run server side (so all clients benefit). Surprised to find no simple add-in to do this, at least in the MS add-in store and with brief googling. KuTools seemed to have potential but was actually damaging (another story)

More information

  • supports sieve scripts but it’s no guarantee, waiting to hear back on detailed limitations

  • Really don’t care to run my own e-mail server, less practical than it seems I would guess

  • Requirement wouldn’t grow beyond 5000. Seems the attack was large but finite
