I found this question about hideous laughter being casted on someone who is flying. My question is for when it’s cast on someone when they‘re climbing.
The spell says fall prone, but it doesn’t say anything about them releasing their grip from what they’re holding (e.g. a ladder like what my PC in my campaign is climbing). Maybe I’m being pedantic but common sense would rule that, if they fall prone, they fall from whatever height they were at. No? Yes?
An NPC spell caster that is using spider climb at the top of a 30′ pillar where it meets the ceiling is magically held by hold person. I have two related questions:
When Hold Person goes into effect, does the NPC fall, or does the Spider Climb magic (which is still in effect) keep his hands and feet bound to the pillar and leaving him suspended 30′ off the floor?
Assuming he does not fall immediately, if the party shoots him with an arrow or other ranged attack, since Dex checks auto-fail when Paralyzed, would that knock him off (and thus fall for 3d6 damage).
I am trying to implement dynamic wall climbing similar to Conan exiles and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
My system as of now uses a raycast to get the direction of a geometry’s normal, and I make the player face that. I send another raycast in the direction of the players input, which takes the hit point, and lerps the player to that ray’s hit position on the geometry.
Although this system works well on a flat wall it struggles a lot on complex geometry such as a bumpy cliff, and constantly hangs on small edges.
I recently saw this video from a cancelled game that seems to implement some sort of navmesh by making a flat plane that follows the terrain’s normals. This allows the player to climb over gaps and complex geometry as if it was a smooth surface.
I don’t completely understand how they managed this, and I was wondering if someone who is knowledgeable about these things could explain how I could implement something like this in Unity.
can we solve an 8*8 slide puzzle using random-restart hill climbing technique (Steepest-Ascent)? if yes how much computing power will this need ? and what is the maximum n*n that can be solved normally? say with a google colab instance
How do i solve this? I am not sure where to start.
The rules on Underwater Combat (PHB pg. 198) state:
When making a melee weapon attack, a creature that doesn’t have a swimming speed (either natural or granted by magic) has disadvantage on the attack roll unless the weapon is a dagger, javelin, shortsword, spear, or trident.
The description of the Gloves of Swimming and Climbing (DMG pg. 172) says:
While wearing these gloves, climbing and swimming don’t cost you extra movement, and you gain a +5 bonus to Strength (Athletics) checks made to climb or swim.
Would wearing the gloves of swimming and climbing count as having a swimming speed for the purpose of avoiding disadvantage on underwater attack rolls?
When you are climbing certain terrains that require an Athletics check, do you have to roll the Athletics check on every turn you climb? Or just once?
Our sorcerer is not an athlete, so she bought a climbers kit to explore the steep slopes of the tundras & snow caps of the sword mountains. This entails some 30, 40, 50 feet climbs on rock and ice. I don’t think the kit should make her a master climber, anymore than owning a stove should make someone a master chef.
I made a mini game involving climbing with climbing kit gear. Such as Piton AC, “special” piton AC, Athletics bonuses to cletes and gloves, etc. It seems to be fun and challenging Terrain puzzle for the PC, but it can be tedious and bring the session to a crawl.
Is there an official way to use piton and harness gear when climbing, or are kits like that made for such mini-game tomfoolery at the DM’s discretion? With the thieves tools kit, you have to be proficient with tools to gain a bonus. I thought maybe every kit was this way. I am looking for clarity regarding using the kit proficiently, as opposed to using it generally.

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Peru for a month and we’d like to do some rock climbing there, as it looks marvellously great. Although I have all the required stuff at home, I’m wondering if it’s worth it to bring all for an entire month in which we also plan to do some long treks.
My question is: it is easy to rent a rope, harness and quick draws in Peru, is it really expensive or is it possible to find a local community willing to share the stuff? Is it simpler to just bring the stuff?
