Gain root rights on web cam?

I bought a webcam from AliExpress for few dollars just to hack it and gain root rights. Things did go well first few atempts and I figured out how to connect over telnet using a non-root user called default. Now I have access to file system but its not root.

Later I figured out there is a shell script called /home/start.sh which is executed every time the cam restarts. The root executes that script and default user may edit it using VI editor. At first I thought BINGOOO!!!!

I wrote following command at the end of /home/start.sh file hoping to reset the root password:

echo "test" > /home/pw_reset.dat echo "test" >> /home/pw_reset.dat passwd root < /home/pw_reset.dat 2> /home/err.log

It didn’t work as expected and the error message was something like:

/etc/passwd read-only filesystem...

After googling this error msg I figured a command to mount root disk with read write rights:

mount -o remount,rw /

This didn’t help me either. Now I am stuck and need your help. The Linux running on the webcam doesn’t support many commands, for example the chown cannot be found.

Please share with me your ideas and examples. What may I try out furthermore to gain root access? What kind of hacky hack do I need to change root pw?

How to set up two concurrent user with euqal rights and permissions?

I would like to have a system with two concurrent users, who are not able to see each others memory nor processes nor data.

So the users shall be able to do whatever they want in their ecosystem, but they should not be able to access any of the other’s activities.

Is the only way to accomplish that, to give root rights to a third party, who is managing the two users?

Video files from a DVD needed admin rights

One night a few months ago I was trying to watch some porn that I had on a DVD. The DVD has several video files on it. The video files are from multiple sources. They are also all pretty old (probably 4+ years).

I didn’t copy the files onto my hard drive but instead just ran them from the DVD.

Every file that I opened needed admin rights in order to play (I had to type the sudo password into the GUI). I did not have the patience at the time to find a workaround so I typed in the password. I am pretty sure that I was using VLC media player.

When watching the videos in Windows (a long time ago), nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

I read on this forum that this command is a sanity check for malware:

sudo dpkg --verify

When I ran that, I got this:

??5?????? c /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

??5?????? c /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults

??5?????? /usr/share/gnome-mahjongg/themes/postmodern.svg

The first one on that list I think is from when I changed settings so that Ubuntu would not require a password when booting and/or at the lock screen. I am not sure what those other 2 results are.

How can I further mitigate problems that I might have created?

The computer that this happened on isn’t a computer that I use a lot. But, I haven’t noticed any new issues after granting the admin rights. However, pretty much since the time that I installed Ubuntu (about 14 months ago), updates regularly fail but seem to eventually work. My internet connection is pretty good and Linux Mint updates don’t have any problems even though I download them very very soon after release.

I suppose I could repeat the process if there is some way to then observe what it does “live.”

Encrypted folder with different access rights for different users

With the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation of EU) comes the necessity for many companies to store certain personal data (CVs, certificates, passport copies, etc.) centrally and encrypted. The data is available e.g. as Word or PDF files, in our case altogether 2000-3000 files distributed on 10 -15 directories.

The filing must take place encrypted, to prevent also IT administrators from access, and centrally, so that the information or deletion request of affected persons can be followed.

That means that only a few people must be able to see/delete all data in the encrypted folder, whilst others only have access to their data stored in subfolders.

How can these requirements be fulfilled with a system, if possible with on-board means from Windows Server or a simple software?

According to my research EFS or Bitlocker are not usable, because either the rights can only be set to single files or no different rights within a container are provided.

I am very grateful for suggestions.
