How do I deal with a player wanting to do an activity that takes weeks when the party doesn’t want to?

I’m currently running a campaign with 5 players at level 3, one of which is a Wizard Dragonborn who’s entire character is devoted to becoming a real dragon by the end of the campaign through some kind of magic or holy gift or something.

As part of this, the player has decided that he absolutely MUST have a Pseudodragon and has decided that next session, as the players have finally returned to town after leaving at level 1, he is going to spend a few days resting before setting off alone to explore the forests of the nearby area to find a Pseudodragon.

I explained to him that on foot, sweeping the whole forest systematically (in a frontier part of the world where the majority of the land is forested) will take literally weeks for his character to do, as he has no spells that can assist him except find familiar (which he could use to sweep the air with a hawk).

When I explained that, this would involve him as a player turning up to the session (online) and contributing essentially nothing for extended periods of time over the course of several sessions (my players have decided they will be leaving town soon and our sessions have very little time between them in the world) he decided that he was fine with that.

I really don’t think that he will be and I’d hate to lose one of my players because in two session’s time he decides that he is really bored and doesn’t want to keep playing but on the other hand I really don’t feel like it’s fair for the other players just to give him what he wants immediately because I’m scared to lose a player.

I know he has said that he is fine with it and I’ve explained the downsides to doing what he is planning to do.

As the DM, is there a better way that I can damage control this? I don’t know if I’m making the right choices by not giving the player what they want but I just cannot see a reasonable way that a player could quickly find a rare animal in hundreds of square miles of forest.

How to manage players wanting to carry out opposing actions?

I need to pick your brains for experience in dealing with this sort of situation.

So, in our campaign there was recently an occasion where a character interfered with another character’s actions.

The chaotic good Cleric decided to save a lycanthrope, tie him up, cast Zone of Truth and then interrogated it. It promised it would not attack the party ever again. The Cleric released the creature. It dashed away.

As it was dashing off into the distance, the true neutral Warlock decided to Eldritch Blast it into oblivion.

There was no way the Cleric could interfere. The lycanthrope was beyond saving at the point.

The Cleric has already stated that she is very suspicious of the Warlock because of his track record of “finishing off” anyone and everyone. So, she is on alert already as to his way of behaving in these sorts of situations. She feels frustrated because she cannot carry out any benevolent or compassionate actions which is part of her role-playing her character, without the Warlock zapping her efforts.

So my question is:

How can the DM can apply a game mechanic to allow the Cleric to react to what the Warlock is intending to do?

Someone suggested the Cleric should be able to take an action to stop the Warlock – that both players might role initiative. The Cleric said would ready an action and either tie and gag the Warlock or cast Silence or Command.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on how to best manage this.

How to handle a player wanting to use the (UA) Remote Access spell on an android player character?

This is in my sci-fi D&D 5e campaign. I have a warlock who’s using a spell from the Modern Magic unearthed arcana called remote access. I also have another player who is playing a homebrew android race which we’ve been considering a construct. The warlock has expressed that if they get annoyed with the other player, they would use remote access on the android.

Would that be possible, and if so, how could I prevent it from happening? I imagine the other player would be really pissed about being taken over.

Here are the race traits of the homebrew Android race:

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Alignment. They don’t tend towards any one alignment, as they were programmed to form their own opinions.

Size. You have the similar height and build to humans. Your size is medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 ft.

Mechanical Nature. You do not need to eat, drink, or breath to survive. But, you do need to recharge your power, which you can do by being near an electrical source during a short or long rest. You need to you run out of power by going 5 days without recharging, this puts you in an inactive state until you are able to recharge again. During a rest, you regain hit points like normal, during this time you make repairs on yourself. Your immune to the poisoned condition and poison damage. But, every time you take acid damage you take an extra 5 points of damage.

Sleep Mode. You only have to rest for 4 hours to get a long rest and 2 hours for a short rest. During this time you’re still conscience of your surroundings.

Wired Connection. You can connect to electronic devices gaining a +2 bonus to all saves and skill checks involving using that device.

Search the Web. When you make an ability check for any skill you can search the internet for tutorials, videos, ‘how to’s’, and other resources giving yourself a +2 bonus to the roll. You can only use this once per long rest.

Languages. You speak English and one other language of your choice.

Sudo apt update returns unverified and unsigned signatures due to unavailable public keys? This stemmed from wanting to reinstall wine

I’m a broke college student whose hard drive recently died, instead of paying for a new copy of windows I went with an Ubuntu distribution. I know very little about computers and have been fumbling blind through google and help threads to this point today.

To give you some idea of my level of experience.

I’ve been trying to run a couple different .exe files through Wine, which hasn’t been working. I figured I could try a fresh reinstall of wine and ran through these steps as proposed by an article on PCsuggest posted in 2018:

sudo apt-get purge wine wine-*

sudo apt-get autoremove –purge

rm -rf ~/.wine/

rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/wine*

Again, no idea what I’m doing here.

I then ran through the steps laid out to install Wine from the winehq site for Ubuntu 18.04. Which went well up until the

sudo apt-add-repository ‘deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main’

line, which didn’t seem to work.Nevertheless, I’m pig-headed enough to keep moving forwards, so then I tried sudo apt update, which definitely didn’t work. That command returned this:

Any help?

I should mention, earlier the problem was a broken line in the sources.list file related to wine. Which I fixed by realizing that (I think?) I had a sources.list file for Ubuntu 16.04, which is the version I installed initially onto my laptop from a flashdrive before updating to 18.04. So I mosey-d on over to https://repogen.simplylinux.ch/ and downloaded a sources.list file for 18.04 and replaced the old one. I have both files backed up as text files on my desktop rn so if I need to put that 16.04 file back in, I think I can do that.

Any help would be appreciated.

As a DM, how do you control a dysfunctional group wanting different things out of a game?

I recently saw a video talking about different kinds of players in DnD and I always understood that people play the game for different reasons. I myself am a roleplayer and enjoy the conversations and acting side of things. But its becoming clear that our group is getting more and more chaotic stupid if you know what I mean.

So one player, lets call him Tom, ends up always being the same character in every campaign, and that character is Tom. Don’t get me wrong I like Tom, but Tom is an Elitist Conservative Christian radical feminist. In every game he refuses to kill enemies (really enjoyable since he’s the only wizard). Now thats not so bad but the problem is his reasoning, see Tom says its “un-godly” to kill someone, again that can be an interesting character trait. But: in every conversation with an NPC he goes either Radical Feminist (EXCUSE ME YOUR HIGHNESS BUT YOUR TREATMENT OF WOMEN IS INSULTING YOU B****) super awkward (hey, i know you’re a level 20 wizard but do you want to join my cult) or just downright insulting (you slaves are really good at building pyramids despite all the dying). The problem with Tom is that when he insults the king, I the roleplayer and others have to get him out of the situation, we can’t let him die. Why? Because we’re playing at Tom’s house and last time he had to do death saving roles he said to the DM “You won’t be able to play DnD here if I die”. Another time he actually tried to bribe the DM with real money in order to gain plot armor. So that’s just a taste of Tom’s antics…

Next we have Max and Daniel who are basically clones of eachother. When I started playing DnD I played the Edgelord character and in hindsight that was a bad move because everyone loved my character. So when we started a new campaign, Max and Daniel turned up with “tormented souls from the underworld”. Most likely deformed assassin’s in a blood pact with satan, hellbent on fulfilling their master’s will. Now again there is nothing really wrong with that kind of character but Max in particular is a complete MURDER HOBO. I swear there have been times where he just says “I slit his throat”. One occasion he performed detailed information on how he tortured someone alive in game, he did this behind the party’s back, and on many occasions he would be talking to a villain or a count and say right in front of him “What are you gonna do you F***-wit you can’t hurt me”. As a DM its getting old now because I have tried to punish Max for all his killing sprees but while he says its “character development” I know he will NEVER change. Daniel isn’t really that different either, his job is just to talk Tom out of predicaments after he gives a 5 minute speech on the treatment of women.

Finally we have Alex and Mark. Mark is the nicest one, he’s the one who introduced us to DnD but I can tell he’s getting bored of everyone messing things up. I think that’s why he stopped being a DM. He means well but he’s not an Actor like me so he usually takes a back seat when Tom and Daniel start arguing. Alex is exactly the same but really he’s universally considered the best player in the group because he’s not disruptive, he’s a so called “Audience Member” and he doesn’t do roleplaying at all. He just sits back and does whatever the DM tells him to do.

But while Mark is teeming with irritation at the group I feel Alex gets his fun from seeing us all fail and be chaotic stupid. We all laugh about it afterwards and I suppose if everyone’s having fun thats all that matters but I’m about to DM this group and I’m worried that like Mark I’m going to regret asking this group of people to play cause they just mess up the story and we have to spend 2 hours escaping a castle cause we set fire to the queen. How do I keep the group from destroying the plot and game?

Also they are all prone to fighting each-other, we’re like the avengers, the biggest threat is ourselves.

What are good multiclass options for a 6th level cleric wanting to help in the front line?

Last session me and my group reached 6th level and as a cleric of the Life domain I got access to all the class features that I wanted out of being a cleric. Now I seek to branch out to being more effective as a damage dealer, seeing how we only have a rogue fighting in the front line. I know multiclassing into fighter would be the most helpful out of every melee class, but I thought maybe going paladin will be better for me specifically seeing that I have the Channel Divinity feature twice per short rest now. Also it’s important to note that I have only 13 in strength, and Im heavily relying on the DM to hand me out a magic item that will help me with that as soon as I’ll pick a melee class in the next level. So what would be more effective, a Fighter, or a Paladin?

H2B visa denied in 2011, but wanting to go on vacation in the USA this summer

I was denied an H2B visa to the United States in late 2011. I tried to get an ESTA not long after but was rejected.

It was denied as at the time I had little residency in the UK. Now circumstances have changed, and I am looking to travel over with my own family for a holiday.

I don’t want to apply for an ESTA until I’m confident I will be able to travel to the USA. I’ve tried contacting the embassy but had no reply.
