How to deal with players that wants their characters to do automatic perception, stealth and searching for traps/secret doors?

Every time my players are exploring a dungeon, they want their characters to do perception checks for monsters, perception checks for traps and/or secret passages while being on stealth mode, all at the same time. If a monster comes or if they activate a trap, they get mad because “my character is always looking for traps”. If I say they need to declare their actions, the game goes like this:

[me describing a area, like a corridor they’re walking in]

player: I check for traps and secret doors in the wall, the floor and the ceiling. I also want to hear anything unusual and walk silently.

They want to be on “automatic mode”, expecting me to roll for their PCs every time they enter a new area. Otherwise they always have this phrase “I check for traps and secret doors in the wall, the floor…” that they say EVERYTIME I introduce a new area. I can’t put them in “automatic” for this kind of roll. We’re playing D&D 5e, but this happen in other campaigns, and it has always been a problem to me.

How do I deal with it?

Player character wants a gun in a prehistoric campaign. What to do?

Brief description of my campaign:

  • Takes place ~1000 years after creation
  • Bronze Age for most of the world, some parts are beginning the Iron Age
  • Dinosaurs and Fae are still relatively common in the material plane.
  • The most advanced city-states are magically advanced instead of technologically advanced.

I am a new DM just starting on worldbuilding for this campaign. So that’s already a relatively big spike in difficulty for me. I’ve been a player on and off for a couple years now so I’m not completely new to DnD. My friend has been my only DM during that time and he’ll be a player in my campaign. I’ve told him what I listed above with a bit more detail for feedback so he knows the type of setting I’m going for.

He wants to play an artificial human who uses swords and guns via Mercer’s Gunslinger class, and he wants his backstory tied to some kind of mafia he’s tried to cut ties with.

It seems like he’s been wanting to play a shadowrun styled campaign for a long time and the character he wants to play just feels completely out of place in my campaign.

The gun is the main problem. Balance for a gun isn’t an issue; I’m confident we could figure that part out, but thematically it just feels wrong the more I flesh out this world. I honestly don’t think even crossbows would be a thing let alone flintlock. We’ve been working out some kind of arcane pistol that shoots aetherial crystalline projectiles that dissipate after a time, but at that point it’s essentially a wand with gunslinger mechanics. Besides that it feels a bit Star Wars-ish to me and that’s not the theme I’m going for.

An artificial human brings to mind an android which is off the table, but I could work out some sort of magical origin, but most likely he’d just be created from some sort of god because to create new complex life at this stage would require godlike abilities and knowledge.

And then the mafia thing is when I realized that perhaps my campaign just wasn’t what he’s looking for. There will be occasional bandits here and there but organized crime isn’t really a thing yet. If anything it’d be a cult in his backstory rather than bandits or crime syndicates.

I’ve told him we should be able to figure it out, because I really do want him to have fun playing whatever he wants, but he’s told me he’s been wanting to play this character for awhile which makes me think he’s really just wanting to play in a completely different setting. The more I work on my world the more it just seems completely out of place to have a character like that in it.

I’m tempted to say he needs to come up with something else entirely. What should I do?

I have thought of a few methods they might accomplish this. In this question, I am wondering about a potentially more controversial option. I am considering having them attempt to monologue or engage the PC’s in dialogue (e.g. offer for them to join his side, explain his plan, answer questions, etc) with a timer running, then increase the battle rounds based on the amount of time they were able to enthrall the PC’s with their speech.

I can see some problems with this:

  • I haven’t used this "on the clock" method before and the players may not recognize what’s happening (kind of the point?); I’ve loosely enforced limiting speech to your turn to maintain a suspension of disbelief
  • This could cause balance issues with planning the time depending on if they catch on quickly or not as all (see below)
  • It would require significant setup, coordinating clues that may let them read into what is happening while also maintaining a monologue
  • Our game is online, so it may be more difficult to implement this strategy

Some details about the campaign/fight (major spoilers for Paizo’s Ruins of Azlant AP)

The party will already be in initiative when they arrive in his area (they have to fight or bypass a couple ‘mooks’ before reaching him) but in our circle of gamers there is a precedent for NPC’s to interrupt combat rounds with speech. In this campaign, that even includes the players taking up another potential enemy’s offer of working together instead of fighting. In the past, however, it hasn’t been relevant that the clock continues moving.

My goal is to cost them a handful of rounds if they are willing to listen to the creature, who is manipulative by nature. I feel this is thematic but unlikely to make the difference in their success or failure in regards to the creature’s plan, but I think it would be an epic moment if it does (or comes down to the line).

Is this a bad idea? Has anyone had success doing something like this, and what was needed to pull it off?

How would you create a frustrated Fire Wizard who wants to be a doctor but things tend to explode when he wants to heal them?

I’m considering a new character for a pirates-themed game of Pathfinder 2e. He was born in an island full of inhabitants with inherent healing magical habilities and in which offensive magic is looked down upon. Naturally, that place became famous for its doctors, and prospered.

My character was, however, gifted with fire magic habilities. So gifted, indeed, that he can’t barely cast anything else without his fire powers manifesting. But he desperately wants to become a doctor… which is a problem, because randomly turning patients on fire is not a very desirable trait.

As a teen, he was going for a walk with his brother when he fell, and broke his leg. Overconfident on his habilities, my character tried to heal it, and the leg exploded. He was deemed unworthy and exiled from the island shortly after.

My character despises offensive magic, despite being really good at it. And desperately wants to redeem himself and return to his island in the future.

How would you implement something like that on pathfinder 2e? My GM is open for any suggestion – including new habilities. I was thinking about a healing hability heavily dependant on the dice and maybe also dependant on wisdom or his level, to mimic him slowly mastering it through the game – lowering (but not nullyfing) the chance of a healing disaster as the game progresses. I would also like if it added a comical factor to the game – a sort of "tension" whenever my character tries to heal somebody, which I think could result in some fun situations for everybody. However, im aware that, if not implemented correctly, it could instead be frustrating.

I’m fairly new to roleplaying games and pathfinder 2e particularly, so I don’t think im able to come with a balanced solution for this. Any ideas?

What are the best 5 arcane spells for area denial? The area to be protected is a control panel that can be reached from two adjacent squares; there is also a hallway leading into the room that they will need to travel through that is 10×10 and 40ft long.

Some members of the party have inanely high Saves, especially against spells, so spells that do not require Saves or still have some effect with a Save should be considered stronger than similar spells that do. The party, as most high level organizations do, have easy access to Freedom of Movement.

Can a D&D5e Wizard cast a Ritual Spell as many times as he wants during the day?

I’m a newbie D&D5e Wizard player and was intrigued by the Ritual tag and it’s major benefits for Wizards.

I’d like to ask if a Ritual Spell in my Spellbook can be cast multiple times a day, without the need for a rest, assuming I have plentiful components to cast said spell? … Thanks, Walts

I can redirect you to other pages without your interaction. Install key loggers. Heck if your browser runs activeX objects I could open a shell on your machine without your knowledge. That last example is rare these days but what’s not rare is tricking you into installing a shell for me, keylogging, session stealing, and redirection.

So, this looks bad, obviously. What I want to know is how can I stop these attacks? Blocking javascript sounds like a good start, the original post also suggested to check my device for open ports (they did not demonstrate how to shut them though). What else? Is there a fool-proof way to prevent these sort of (virus injection? remote control?) attacks? I am not talking about logging, though. That’s a given when you connect to any network.

What I’m most worried about is virus injection. But other attacks (like key loggers) mentioned above are concerns too. Just share whatever comes to mind. I’m sure other people will fill in the blanks.
